biography:
Anthony Mariquit aka( DaFunkt )
Production Company: Sinister Concepts
“I must have been 13 (years old) when I bought my first
set of turntables…” recalls Tony. And with a little
laugh and smile, “They were belt-drives” he continued.
“I’ve always had a deep love for music, and the energy
it possesses. (To me) it’s like an extension of my inner
self. Regardless of the mood my aura is in, I can always
turn to music to exploit, change, or simply just help
me forget that mood.” Tony has been involved in different
expressions of music for over 16 years now. Much of
his mixing style was heavily influenced by his early
years as a mobile DJ. “I remember back in the day when
there were DJ crews, and all the Battle-of-the-DJ parties
at the colleges and halls. It was a lot of fun participating
against and even just watching other crews, (like Rude
Boy).” As his fascination with the powers of music grew,
he decided he wanted to share his spiritual feelings
and create his own music. He started a band with some
of his friends in the early-to-mid 90’s. “It was funny…
the first time we ever played out was at a friend’s
house party. And I can remember my knees shaking profusely…
even when we were already on our third song of the set.
Behind a DJ booth, they can’t see my knees-a-knockin’,
but standing behind a bass…” (Shaking his head) “oh
man…. Hahaha.” He believes that life is deeply rooted
by family and culture. As an expression of this belief,
he played live instruments (the gandingan) onstage in
a Kulintangan Ensemble for the Folklorico Filipino Dance
Company of New York. “Stage fright was gone by then”
he claims with a smile. In ’97, kismet had introduced
him to Alvaro. He had started a new job, and his desk
was adjacent to the desk of Alvaro. “Al’s been a great
inspiration on me. We used to talk about our different
paths in music, and it’s funny how we had mutual friends
in the industry… like Angel (Slam Mode).” And with a
smile of satisfaction, “I guess you can say that’s where
the story all begins…” “Working with Wayne (Gardiner)
is an invaluable experience. He’s a great influence
on me. The experience he brings, and his grasp of the
soul we have is compelling. I always look forward to
the projects we work on, and to future projects that
come our way.” Deep, jazzy house music is what’s in
store from Sinister Concepts. They look to bring you
beats to stomp the floor to, as well as grooves and
melodies to dance in your head. In essence, they look
to bring you the embodiment that has made them the persons
they are today. And as a final word, Tony added this…
“Music is like a journal for me. My deepest thoughts
and emotions are embodied in it. It is my pen… It is
my soul.”
